Destroying Temptation

There has no temptation taken (overtaken) you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear (endure) it – 1st Corinthians 10:13.

As Christians, temptation will come, but God will give us the power to endure temptation without falling into temptation. There’s a difference between falling into temptation and practicing temptation.

The Bible has given Christians examples of godly men who were tempted by temptation, but didn’t fall or practice temptation. Temptation is something that comes to even the strongest Christians, and at times some may fail and be overtaken by temptation. If that is the case, the person should confess their sin to God, ask for forgiveness, and take precautions in order not to fall into the same situation again. The majority of the time, if we look at how the temptation came and how we responded to the temptation, we can always see how we can avoid the situation from happening again.

First of all, Jesus instructed His disciples to pray unless they will fall into temptation (And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak – Mark 14:37-38). Temptation is a spirit, it comes to influence someone to do the opposite of what God has instructed the believer to do. The more we pray, the less temptation will come. Fasting is another way to fight temptation. Paul was a mighty man of God, but he knew in order to make his physical body to come subject to the Word of God, he would have to fast in order to starve the temptation the body desired (But I keep {discipline} under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway {disqualified}). Sin appeals to our senses, but prayer coupled with fasting will build our spirit and weaken the physical senses to be tempted.

Reading the Bible consistently will give knowledge and revelation of what we’re dealing with spiritually. God speaks through His Word, and He will speak His Word to our mind and our heart and sometimes, He will speak in an audible voice. As long as we’re Christians and living in this world, we don’t have to become a part of this world. We can defeat temptation by our submission to the Word of God, prayer and fasting will give us victory. Secondly, when we know we have a weak point, we should have a stronger sister or brother we can confide in, having someone aware of our actions as well as praying and fasting with us to help us overcome temptation.

Just because one falls into temptation does not mean they have to stay there. Confess your sin to the Father, ask for forgiveness and strength to not continue in that sin. Sin comes in many forms, and as Christians, we must be aware of Satan and the ways he tries to tempt us. Sometimes sins comes through our emotions, saying and speaking words that destroys rather than building up. Fear is a sin, if we’re going to fear anything let it be God, when we fear Him, we will reverence and respect Him and His Word.

Another way to fight temptation is to listen and look at programs that will build your faith rather than draining your faith. How can one faith grow when they continue to put ungodly information in their heart and spirit? As Christian, we’re in a spiritual fight with someone we can’t see, we have to stay focus on God and His Word to defeat the enemy of our souls. Just because you’re in a fight; does not mean you have to lose. You have the greater One living within you, place your trust, faith and confidence in Him and submit to God’s written Word!.
