Bible Study, John Chapter 6 Verses 55-64

John 6:55 – For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.  It is a certain sign that you have no spiritual life in you if you have no desire towards Jesus nor delight in His teaching. Jesus is the Word that became flesh when we read and study the Word of God, we are eating, and just like the blood that gives us life, His Words gives us life, it cleanses away the sin.  It is also certain that you can have no spiritual life unless you derived it from Jesus Christ by faith, separated from Him, you can do nothing.

John 6:56 – He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.  The benefits and advantages are, we shall be one with Jesus, by faith we have a close and intimate union with Jesus. He is in us, and we in Him.  So is the union between Jesus and the believers that He shares their griefs, pain and sorry, and they share in His graces and joys. Then the believer will live eternally by Him; true believers receive this divine life by virtue of their union with Jesus Christ. If Jesus is truly living within us then the believer no longer lives as he or she did before receiving salvation. They will live their life by the character and behavior of Jesus. Jesus used parables on many occasions to bring about something spiritual.

John 6:57 – As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.  Jesus is making a distinction between Him and the Father, He didn’t send Himself, but the Father who lives sent Him. Some believe that God and Jesus are the same, God is the Father and Jesus is the Son whom God called Him God (But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever: A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom – Hebrews 1:8). Just as we need bread to nourish our bodies, Jesus is the bread (Word) of God that nourishes our spirit, and His Word will also heal our bodies as we read it and believe it. We can’t have eternal life without Him, as we receive Him, we live by Him.

John 6:58- This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.  God fed their father’s manna to nourish them physically but it wasn’t enough to keep them from dying. Jesus came to bring life eternally and those that eat (read) the Word of God; except the Son and submit to the written Word that brings spiritual life shall live for eternity.

John 6:59 – These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum. Jesus was teaching them who He was, who sent Him and by believing through faith in Him they too would have life through Him. His teaching to eat living bread means to unite ourselves to Christ by believing in His death (the sacrifice of His flesh); and His resurrection (by devoting ourselves to living as He requires, depending on His teaching for guidance and trusting).  He was teaching them that His life had to become their own by Him living through them, and them through Him.

John 6:60 – Many therefore of his disciples when they heard this said, This is a hard saying; who can hear (understand) it?  Disciple literally means ” learner” and is used in a variety of ways in the New Testament; it includes believers who go beyond initial faith to baptism by water and baptism in the Holy Spirit and living in obedience to the Word of God.  Some of the crowd were students; they came to learn, not all of them accepted the idea of eating flesh and drinking blood for as the Jews were forbidden to even taste blood. Those who were not students who had walked and lived with Jesus should have known He was using a parable to bring about a spiritual meaning.

John 6:61 – When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?  Jesus knew them, He saw them, and He heard them. Jesus knew them better than they knew themselves.  He gives them a hint of His Ascension into heaven which would give an irresistible evidence of the truth of His doctrine. The disciples who had a closer and more intimate relationship with Him more than the others that were in the crowd should have known exactly what He was talking about and should not have been offended.

John 6:62 – What if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?  Jesus was asking, “If the thought of eating flesh and drinking blood offended them, they would be further offended at the idea of His Ascension. They were trying to understand the natural when He was speaking about the spiritual, the natural man can’t discern the things of the spirit.

John 6:63 – It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.   Jesus was trying to get the religious leaders to see beyond the physical aspects of His teaching to the real issue, namely, that if they believed on Him they would have everlasting life. It is the Spirit of God that assist the believers to understand the spiritual, without the Spirit the Words and ordinances of the Word of God would not profit the natural man because they don’t understand.  The Bible is God’s written Word for the believer that brings life naturally and spiritually.   It gives healing to the natural man (spirit, soul, and body), and brings everlasting life to those who believe and submit themselves to the written Word f God.

John 6:64 – But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.  Jesus knew who believed and who didn’t believe without them saying so, and because of their unbelief, they couldn’t inherit the kingdom. He was aware of the disciple that would betray Him, just as He knew the heart of His disciples, He’s aware of the heart of the present-day disciples. To deny His Word is to reject His Word, to reject His Word is to reject Him and the Father will reject them. In order to receive the kingdom, we must live by kingdom principals.
