Bible Study – John Chapter 8 Verses 32-41

John 8:32 – And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.  Jesus Himself is the truth that makes us free.  He is the source of truth, the perfect standard of what is right.  He frees us from the consequences of sin, from self-deception and deception from Satan. When Jesus left to return to the Father, He told His disciples that He would send a Comforter, another helper which is the Holy Spirit.  When the Holy Spirit which is the Spirit of truth resides in our being, it is He that opens our understanding to the Bible, the authentic Word of God.  He gives the believer revelation of the Word of God. As we seek to serve God, Jesus’ perfect truth frees us to be all that God meant for us to be.  Jesus neither does the Holy Spirit speak of themselves but only what they hear the Father say (Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself, but whatsoever he hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come – John 16:13).  The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity; equal with the Father and Son in essence, separate in person, and submissive in duties. The Word of God frees those who believe, accept, and submit to the Word of God. Every believer should desire the gift of the Holy Spirit, it is He that not only gives us the revelation of God’s Word but help us to submit to it.  When we’re submissive to the Word of God, the Word continues to cleanse us from worldly desires and cravings, we are free from the bondage that the world and Satan try to keep us in.

John 8:33 – They answered him, we be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?  The Pharisees reply to their freedom is not accurate, in their past, the Israelites had been in bondage to the Egyptians, Assyrians, and the Babylonians. At the time they spoke, Israel was under the power of Rome. Although they were not looking at it from a spiritual perspective they were in bondage, they rejected Jesus as well as His teaching, they were in spiritual bondage and they were also in bondage by the Romans, they were not free.

John 8:34 – Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.  Sin has a way of enslaving us, controlling us, and dominating as well as dictating our actions.  Jesus was speaking of spiritual slavery and the Jews nor the Pharisees recognize they were enslaved by sin and men’s tradition. Jesus came to set the captives free but they were rejecting the freedom He was offering; only Jesus is the breaker of chains and frees the person from bondage.  Most people that are bondage is not aware they are in sin until they accept the Word of God that points out sin in their life.

John 8:35 – And the servant abideth not in the house for ever; but the Son abideth ever.  A slave was not a permanent resident of a house.  A son remained a family member with family privileges forever.  Jesus is saying, that the Son, who is Jesus, Son of man, as a family member, the Son can bestow family privileges.  When a believer truly gives their heart to the Lord and accept and submit to the Word of God he or she has become a member of God’s family, and the Son who is our Saviour will give us the privileges that go with being a member of the family.

John 8:36 – If the Son, therefore, shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.  When Jesus set a person free they don’t have to be in bondage unless they give up their freedom Jesus gave them.  Jesus is the only one that can set us free from sin and empower us to resist sin. When we accept Jesus as Lord, making Him Lord of our life, He gives us divine empowerment to live in this world and not be a part of the world’s actions (According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue – 2nd Peter 1:3). No way one can have an encounter with Jesus and stay the same; this is the purpose of Jesus dying for our sin so that we would no longer be in bondage to sin.

John 8:37- I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye are seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.  Abraham’s descendants may have been physical heirs of Abraham, but they were not his spiritual descendants unless they had faith. But instead of trusting Jesus Christ to forgive their sins, the religious leaders wanted to kill Him. They heard the word but did not believe it, therefore, they could not experience its truth.

John 8:38 – I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.  Jesus’ doctrine was from heaven, what Jesus has shown us of God and another world is not grounded upon guess and hearsay.  The doctrine of Jesus was not only what He had heard from the Father, but what He had seen with Him.  As a child that is trained up with his father learns his father’s words and behavior, and grow like him by imitation as well as by natural image, so these Jews made themselves like the devil; they were carrying out the actions of their father.

John 8:39 – They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.  The Pharisees believed that being a descendant of Abraham guaranteed them a place in heaven.  The works of Abraham included paying honor to those who spoke in the name of God.  Abraham believed God and it was granted to Him for righteousness, Jesus was sent from God to His people and they didn’t believe. They were so ungodly as to seek the One who told them the truth; Jesus was speaking what He heard from His Father and they did not believe whereas Abraham believed those that came as a spokesperson for God. Jesus was speaking from what He had heard from His Father.

John 8:40 – But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. They didn’t want to hear the truth, they wanted to kill Jesus because of His words and the miracles He had performed.  They didn’t love the Father so they couldn’t love the Son. They wanted to kill the Son, the One that God had sent to set them free. When a person is embedded in religious it’s harder for them to accept the truth whereas those that are practicing sin will receive the Word of God and be set free.

John 8:41 – Ye do the deeds of your father.  Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.  Jesus made a distinction between hereditary sons and true sons. The religious leaders were hereditary of Abraham and therefore claimed to be sons of God.  Their actions showed them to be true sons of Satan, they lived under Satan’s guidance.  True sons of Abraham wouldn’t have acted as they did.  A true son whether it’s for God or Satan is the one you obey.  They were obeying their father; they wanted to kill Him.  As Christians, we need to do a daily check to see who are we obeying. We need to check to see is our lives in line with the Word of God; and in order to see whether or not we are living according to the Word of God, we must read the instruction that comes from the Bible for the believer.
