Refreshment of the Spirit
For which cause we faint (do not lose heart) not; but though outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day – 2nd Corinthians 4:16.
The precious gift that was ever given except for Jesus was the gift of the Holy Spirit to indwell and infill believers. In order for us to benefit in our daily lives from the Presence of the Holy Spirit within us, we must experience constant renewals of God’s quickening power in our spirit.
Many believers have accepted salvation but they don’t go any farther than that. One of God’s purposes since the beginning has been to dwell with humanity and enjoy fellowship with us. He does it in this dispensation through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Some say we receive the Holy Spirit as soon as we’re saved, but it contradicts when Jesus instructed His disciples to ask for the gift of the Holy Spirit (If ye then being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him – uke 11:23). If we received it automatically, why would we have to ask for the gift of the Holy Spirit? Second Scripture to also indicate we’re not automatically filled with the Holy Spirit when we receive salvation is when Apollos was a believer, he had received salvation but he hadn’t received the Holy Spirit (He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost [Holy Spirit] since ye believed? and they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost – Acts 19:2). (And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied – Act 19:6). The gift of the Holy Spirit is for every believer if they so desire to be filled with the precious gift just by asking the Father for it.
As born-again Christians who have received the Holy Spirit, we need to be renewed. Our bodies are continually growing older and the outward man which is our physical bodies is in the process of decaying but our inward man is renewed day by day. Since the new birth is a work of the Holy Spirit, the daily renewal of our spirit will also come through the source of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. The Apostle Paul’s prayer for the Ephesian’s believer was that they would be strengthened (That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the innerman – Ephesians 3:16). In order to to be renewed in our spirit through the Holy Spirit, we must have an intimate fellowship with Him, this comes by daily prayer, reading the Word of God, studying the Word of God, and a constant reminder of whose indwelling your spirit. We talk to Him as our friend, One who comforts, reveal and instruct. It is the Holy Spirit indwelling that assists us to be submissive to the Word of God. He gives us joy and He helps us to communicate with the Father.
Believers don’t have to tarry to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit they just need to receive the supernatural experience by faith as part of their rightful inheritance in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is given to them that will obey Him (And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost whom God hath given to them that obey Him – Acts 5:32). God is very much aware of who will and who will not be submissive to His written instructions. (And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God – Romans 12:2). Renewing the mind is a continual process, the Holy Spirit renews our mind as we study and meditate on the Word of God and is willing to submit to its instructions. Take time read and study the Word of God, make a conscious decision to submit to Word of God, and you will receive a renewal of your spirit, a renewal of your commitment and the joy of the Lord.
