Bible Study – John Chapter 9 Verses 32-41

John 9:32 – Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. The healed man is trying to let the Jewish leaders know; if this man was a sinner as you say He is “Now we know that God heareth not sinners, but if any man be a worshiper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth”, then I’m living proof, that God heard His prayer for me because I was blind now I’m seeing.  Jesus could not work miracles if He was a sinner as they said He was. The healed man is trying to open their understanding of Jesus, by bringing to their memory, it had not been heard of since the world began of a man healing one that was born blind; that in itself should let you know this man is not a sinner. In other words, he’s saying, there is no healing of a blind man recorded anywhere in the Old Testament.

John 9:33 – If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. The blind have more knowledge of Jesus than the Jewish leaders who pretended that they had so much knowledge of God. The blind man understands that if Jesus was not sent from God He could do nothing. The Jewish leaders did not want to accept Jesus’ deity although they saw a miracle performed by a man who claims to be the Son of God.

John 9:34 – They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. The Jewish leaders didn’t want to hear anything from the man the miracle had been performed on. Rather than accepting a miracle had been performed by Jesus who was claiming to be God’s Son they discredit what the man was saying and begin to exalt themselves above the man because of their leadership. Assuming because they were in leadership, the man couldn’t teach them anything. It’s spiritually dangerous when leadership thinks they are above others, everyone can be taught if they have a learnable and humble heart. The Jewish leaders were so angry with the man they cast him out

John 9:35 – Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? After hearing that the Pharisees had cast the man out, Jesus went looking for him and when He found him, He asked him if he believed that He was the Son of God. In order to get to God, one must come through Jesus. It’s through Him one can receive salvation, it’s through Him we receive everything we need from the Father. Jesus goes before the Father on our behalf.

John 9:36 – He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?  Although the man had experienced a miracle, he did not know who Jesus was but was willing to find out who He was. If anyone really wants to know who Jesus is, He will reveal Himself to those who are seeking to know Him.

John 9:37 – And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. Jesus’ reply to the man was that he had seen Him and it was He who was talking with Him. Jesus didn’t get upset because the man didn’t recognize who He was, but open the man’s understanding of who He was.

John 9:38 – And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshiped him. The healed man’s understanding was progressing in the understanding of the person of Jesus. First, he called Jesus “a man verse 11, then a prophet, verse 17; and finally, he realized that Jesus is the Son of God verse 38.  After Jesus informs the man who He was, the man’s reply was, he believed He was the Son of God and begin to worship Him. The more this man experienced his new life through Jesus Christ the more confident he became in the One who had healed him.  He gained not only physical sight but also spiritual sight as he recognized who healed him.

John 9:39 – And Jesus said, For judgment, I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.  Jesus’ coming into the world will result in judgment at the end because some refused to believe. As the light of the world, Jesus came that the blind might see and those who think they can see will be made blind. Jesus’ first coming was to bring salvation to all, but His second coming will be to judge those who rejected His Father’s salvation through Him.

John 9:40 – And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?  The Pharisees heard what Jesus said to the man and most likely was upset with what they heard by asking Him were they blind also. The Pharisees were shocked that Jesus thought they were spiritually blind. Jesus countered that only blindness which was stubbornness could excuse their behavior.

John 9:41 – Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sins remaineth.  Jesus’ reply was since they said they can see their sins wouldn’t be forgiven. He wasn’t saying because they didn’t know who He was they had no sin, Jesus has performed miracles, blinded eyes open, lame man healed, turned water to wine, the Jewish leaders had heard from the people who had witnessed these miracles and they still rejected the deity of Jesus.  Jesus Himself had said He was sent from God and He was the Son of God so they had no excuse not know who He was. Those whose eyes will remain spiritually open will recognize how sin had them blinded to the truth of what was sin according to God.
