This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh (Galatians 4:16).
God has given each of us a choice to either submit ourselves to His instructions or follow our own desires. Professing Christians sometimes would rather do it their way rather than doing it God’s way. God has given His people His written Word to live by and the gift of the Holy Spirit to empower them to live according to His instructions. Those that are led by the Spirit are sons of God that include females as well (For as many are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God -Roman 8:24. Led indicates being submissive to the Spirit of God. Walking in the Spirit is living by the Spirit which indicates the Christian has given themselves completely to God that He may show Himself through that individual to be an example of Christ. Jesus is the Son of God who came to take on the sins of the world in order for mankind to be reconciled to God and be in union with Him. Jesus didn’t die in order for us to continue to practice sin.
One of the many reasons the children of Israel was led in captivity by their enemies is because they always wanted to be like other nations who were serving other gods and living according to their will. Nationality nor culture gives the individual the right to live opposite of the instructions of God if they are professing to be Christians or followers of God. Christian’s are to live with the assistance of the Holy Spirit directing them in everyday life. Christians must yield to the Spirit, that is, submitting their desires to those of the Spirit. Christians who live by the Spirit will not fulfill or carry out the desires of the flesh. Lust is a strong desire, flesh is our sinful nature. Lust can be anything from sexual impurity to over-eating. To walk in the Spirit is to live by the Spirit of God in submission to His directions in all areas of our life.
God knew we couldn’t live according to His Word through our own strength so He gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit to assist us. Our accepting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour gives us Grace which means favor with God through Jesus Christ. Many have taken Grace for the excuse to sin, but Grace is given to assist the individual to resist sin.
Walking in the Spirit means the Fruit of the Spirit is being manifested in the individual’s life on a daily basis: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. Fruit is the attributes of our Father and our Savior. A daily check with our behavior comparing it to the Fruit of the Spirit will let us know where we need to grow spiritually. If ones desire to live a life that is pleasing to God all they have to do is ask the Father for help; He will empower those who desire to live according to His written instructions.
The problem is many want to serve God on Sunday and Monday through Saturday they want to live according to their desires and passions. Every day is a day professing Christians should live according to the Word of God; our strength to do this is through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. No one knows the day Jesus will return so we must live every day as though He might appear as quick as an eye blink.
