He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself but he that prophesieth edifieth the church – 1st Corinthians 14:4.
Praying in tongues has been a debate in the Christian community for years. Some say tongues is not for the believers today while others don’t want to have anything to do with speaking in tongues, they degrade it as though it was some type of disease when the Bible speaks about the believer speaking in tongues.
In most movies that are about demons, people and demons are speaking in tongues, but when the righteous speak in tongues they are devilish or uneducated. When people talk about tongues in a degrading manner they are speaking against the Holy Spirit. Yes, some people who speak in tongues are possessed by Satan, Satan has always imitated what God does. One can only speak in tongues by the Holy Spirit or Satan.
Before Jesus’ ascension He instructed His disciples or followers to go to Jerusalem and wait for the promise. They all continued with one purpose or mind in prayer and supplication in the upper room. On the day of Pentecost they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. The Word of God never changes, He is still instructing His people to be filled with the Holy Spirit to be led by the Spirit and not their own spirit.
In writing to the church at Corinth, the Apostle Paul encouraged believers to speak with other tongues in their private worship and in their prayer life as a means of spiritual edification. Praying in tongues is a charge to our spirit. The word charge is often used in reference to a battery, if a battery in an automobile runs down, we hook it up to a power source and charge it up. In other words, we build up the battery until it has the power to do what is was made to do. In other words, as we pray in tongues, we are charging up our spirits by the power of the Holy Spirit!
We have been instructed to pray in the spirit (ut ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost – Jude 20. If your spiritual battery runs down, this Scripture tells you how to get it charged. You pray in the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues benefits you, it builds your spirit man so that you can live and do what you were meant to do! Thank God for this supernatural means of building ourselves up on our most holy faith! Yes, we can be built up by reading the Bible, yes, we can be greatly helped by praying other kinds of prayers in our language we’re familiar with, but yet speaking in tongues is one primary way God has given us to build our spirit, and nothing else can take its place.
Just because you’re born again and Spirit-baptized doesn’t mean you’ve “arrived” and there’s nothing else you need in your walk with God. You still need to receive might by God’s Spirit in your inner man. It’s true that you need to know the Word and to quote Scriptures and make confessions in line with God’s promises. All of this is important, but there is nothing like being able to speak to God (For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him, howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries – 1st Corinthians 14:2).
When one speaks in tongues no one can interpret it unless God wants what has been prayed be interpreted (But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church, and let him speak to himself and to God – 1st Corinthians 14:28). Secondly, praying in tongues stop Satan from hindering your prayers because he can’t interpret what’s being prayed. Thirdly, tongues are a sign to the non-believer (Wherefore tongues are for a sign not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe – 1 Corinthians 14:22).
People and Satan have discouraged people to receive the Holy Spirit when it’s a gift to everyone that is willing to submit to God’s written Word. It’s through the Holy Spirit that prompts us to pray when we don’t know what to pray for. It’s the Holy Spirit that enables us to pray exactly for what God will have us to pray for. The Holy Spirit will never pray against the will of God or pray for something that dishonors God’s character.
Take time read and study the Word of God. Pray and ask God for the understanding of the gift of tongues. Just as it was for the people of the Bible, its for today’s Christian that’s will receive and submit to God’s written Word. It’s the Holy Spirit praying through us, it’s the Holy Spirit interceding for those that are in need of prayer and deliverance. Don’t bash what you don’t understand. Speaking in tongues is a gift God has given to everyone that is willing to receive it.
