WHY TONGUES

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God – John 3:5.

Every professing Christian should be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is different than receiving salvation. Jesus communes with us through the Holy Spirit, and we communicate with God, speaking with our natural speech and through the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues.

Jesus instructed Nicomedus to enter the kingdom of God; one must be born again. Born again is the new birth, or regeneration is the act by which God imparts spiritual life to one who trusts Christ. Without this spiritual birth, a person can’t perceive spiritual things, nor can he or she enter the kingdom of God.

Those who have not received the new birth can’t comprehend the things of the Spirit (But the carnal man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness to him; neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned – 1st Corinthians 2:14. The Holy Spirit opens our understanding to the Word of God, His Words are spiritually, and they must be interpreted by the Spirit.

The natural person does not have the Spirit of God, unlike the Christian, who does have the Spirit. Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well that God was looking for those who would worship Him in spirit and in truth. The only way this can occur is the Holy Spirit must be indwelling the individual (Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself: but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come – John 16:13).

There is so much debate about speaking in tongues when it should not be. It’s through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit one can understand about tongues and and agree with the Word of God. When we debate we’re debating about the Word of God. God does not commune with us by our flesh, our natural man, but through His Spirit that dwells within us. Jesus dwells in our hearts, and God the Father dwells within our spirit (Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love Me, he will keep My words: and My Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make Our abode with him – John 14:23). Every professing Christian needs the Holy Spirit, He will dwell in every denomination when one accept Him.

Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian church admonishing them to prophesy and speak in tongues (Wherefore, brethren, covet [earnestly desire] to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues – 1st Corinthians 14:39). Paul wasn’t telling them not to speak in tongues, but don’t stop speaking in tongues.

Speaking in tongues is a sign one has been baptized in the Holy Spirit (Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe – 1st Corinthians 14:22). Holy Spirit is not just for speaking in tongues, but empowerment for us to live according to the Word of God without doubting and debating. He empowers us to live a godly lifestyle daily.

When we speak in tongues, we speak directly to God (For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries – 1st Corinthians 14:2). This tells us that tongues are a divine means of communication between the speaker and the Lord. The Holy Spirit enables the believer to pray according to the will of God. He assists in our praying when we don’t know what to pray for. He assists us in worshiping God in spirit and truth. He assists us in worship.

Speaking in tongues edifies the person speaking in tongues (He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself: but he that prophesieth edifieth the church – 1st Corinthians 14:4). The word edify means “to comfort,” to encourage, give strength, or to build up.” It is the Holy Spirit who works in us to develop godly character and behavior and grow in grace.

Our spirit prays when we have been filled with the Holy Spirit (For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful – 1st Corinthians 14:14). When one’s spirit is praying, it is the highest form of worship that a believer can engage. It’s a prayer that comes from deep within our soul and not from one’s mind.

Building your spirit when speaking in tongues (But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost [Spirit] – Jude 1:20). Praying in the Spirit helps to develop our faith because when a person is praying in the Spirit, he is praying faith, praying victory, There is no doubt or unbelief when the Holy Spirit is praying through us.

The Holy Spirit is the promised Jesus was telling His disciples to ask the Father (If ye then being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him – Luke 11:13)? To receive the Holy Spirit one must be willing to live according to the Word of God (And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost [Spirit] even as he did unto us – Acts 15:8).

The reason why some Christians don’t receive the Holy Spirit is that they want to live partially for God and partially for the world, and it will not work. It’s either completely for God or to live according to the god of this world. Others don’t receive because they don’t believe they will receive the Holy Spirit. Some haven’t received the gift of the Holy Spirit because they are afraid; fear comes from Satan, not God.

The Holy Spirit is more than just speaking in a language we don’t understand. He gives one knowledge for the natural and the spiritual. He gives wisdom, control, and authority to bind and lose in the spirit into the natural. He gives discernment, patience, and love we can’t do by our own strength.

Christians can’t live a Godly life without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit lives within you, He will make Himself known.
