Golden Text:  They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. – Isaiah 11:9

Assyria would be like a tree cut down at the height of its power, never to rise again. Judah the royal line of David would be like a tree chopped down to a stump. But from that stump a new branch would grow, the Messiah. He would be greater than the original tree and would bear much fruit. The Messiah is the fulfillment of God’s promise that a descendant of David would rule forever.

Isaiah 11:1 – And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.

The prophet indicates that Jesus’ coming is yet in the distant future. Isaiah predicts that the “tree” of the line of David will be cut down and that a shoot must grow out of the stock of Jesse before it will flourish again. He predicts that a rod will come forth from the stem of Jesse, David’s father and the forefathers of the Davidic line. Branch is used in parallel with rod. As David inaugurated a kingdom of righteousness and peace, the new David, the “rod” or root from David’s line will establish an incomparably greater kingdom. The words Rod and Branch are Messianic terms. They are figurative words for the great descendants of the household of David, the seed of the woman promised in Genesis 3:15 (And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between they seed and her seed; it will bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel).

Isaiah 11:2 – And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

The Spirit of the Lord refers to the seven-fold Spirit of God describes in Revelation 4:5. Solomon prayed for wisdom and understanding, the administrative skills to govern the people according to the principles of righteousness and justice. Jesus is the embody of all this. The Holy Spirit counsel is not advice, but authoritative plans and decisions. The fear of the Lord, Jesus would demonstrate in all His life the correct response to God, giving us an example of this is what our life should be also. Jesus would honor and obey Him.

Isaiah 11:3 – And shall make Him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and He shall not judge after the sight of His eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of His ears.

Because the Spirit of God was upon Jesus, He would not judge after the sight of His eyes, He has true spiritual vision. Jesus knows what’s in the heart as well as the thoughts of man prior to the thought being established in the mind of the person. It coincides with Old Testament scripture (But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or the height for the Lord seeth not as man see the for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart – 1st Samuel 16:7). Jesus knows what’s in a person prior to it being acted out. He knows the thought and intense of the heart.

Isaiah 11:4 But with righteousness shall He judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and He shall smite the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips shall He slay the wicked.

Judge in this scripture doesn’t mean to bring people to account, but to act on their behalf. As the judge of His people, God sentences the wicked and offers protection and defense for the innocent and oppressed. Rod of His mouth, the Messiah will conquer by His speech (For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart – Hebrews 4:12). He will slay the wicked with His breath (And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword that with it, He should show the nations: and He will rule them with a rod of iron: and He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God).

Isaiah 11:5 – And righteousness shall be the girdle of His lions, and faithfulness the girdle of His reins.

There shall be great peace and tranquility under His government. There will be no more hurt and pain caused by others.

Isaiah 11:6-7 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

There will be unity and concord. The wolf shall dwell peaceably with the lamb; men of the most fierce and furious disposition shall have their temper so strangely altered the Grace of Jesus that they will live in love even with the weakest and such as formerly were an easy prey. Christ, who is our peace, came to slay all enmities, and to settle lasting friendships. among His followers, particularly between Jews and Gentiles. The leopard shall not tear the kid, but shall lie down with her, even their young ones shall lie down together, and shall be trained up in blessed amity. The lion shall cease to be ravenous and shall eat straw like the ox before the fall of man,the asps and the cockatrice shall cease to be venomous.

Isaiah 11:8 – And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice den.

A generation of vipers shall become a seed of saints. This is fulfill in the wonderful effect of the gospel upon the minds of those that sincerely embrace it. It changes the nature and make those that trampled on the meek of the earth, not only meek like them, but affectionate towards them. Safe and security, Christ the great Shepherd shall take such care of his flock, that they shall not only not destroy one another, but no enemy from without shall be permitted to give them any molestation. God’s people shall be delivered not only from evil, but from fear of it.

Isaiah 11:9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of  Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

God will make Himself known throughout the earth. The presence of the Lord shall extinguish men’s heart of animosities. It is incredible for hostile people to live at peace with one another only in union with Jesus Christ can we love enough to overcome our hostilities. When we accept salvation and allow the Holy Spirit to remove the ideas and the actions of the world from our hearts minds. He will give us the heart of God and the mind of Jesus Christ. Our thoughts and heart will be changed, we will react the character and behavior of our Father and His Son.
