Bible Study – John Chapter 7 Verses 16-30

John 7:16 – Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.  Jesus was explaining to His listeners what He was teaching was from the One who sent Him; He’s teaching what was taught to Him by the Father.  Those who attempt to know God God’s will and do it will know intuitively that Jesus was telling the truth about Himself.  Jesus’ statement indicates that He did not receive His teaching from the rabbis nor did He fabricate it, instead His teaching came directly from God.

John 7:17 – If any man will do his will he shall know of the doctrine whether it be of God or whether I speak of myself.  Obedience will help to determine true doctrine because the individual will adhere to the doctrine. As he or she submits to the Word of God they will have a new look on life and their surroundings.  The Bible is the written Word of God; when we search the Scriptures; God will begin to give a revelation of His Word.  Jesus taught of the Father, He didn’t teach of Himself. The Bible is the only book we can read and as the reader willingly submits to it; they will become sons of God whether they are male or female.  In the Spirit, there is neither male or female when it comes to being a child of God.  Because they have the inward witness within them what is true or what is not true.

John 7:18 – He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.  Whether it’s a minister or layperson when they are directing the people to themselves, they are seeking glory for themselves and not God’s glory.  All glory, honor, and praise belong to God and when we seek to give Him glory we don’t take the credit and the individual will let others know who the glory belongs to.  When God is giving the glory the individual speaks and teaches about the Father; the individual has forsaken themselves and has completely submitted themselves to God which causes them to be righteous in the eyes of God.  The test of a teacher or lay person is whether or not they deliver God’s message.

John 7:19 – Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law?  Why go ye about to kill me?  Jesus reminds them of the law Moses gave them and they didn’t keep it (Moses commanded us a law, even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob – Deuteronomy 33:4). Jesus knew they didn’t keep the law and He knew they wanted to kill Him because they heard of God but they didn’t know God and because they didn’t know God they couldn’t understand or believe the doctrine Jesus was teaching.  The religious leaders were breaking Moses’ law by seeking to kill Jesus.  The Pharisees spent their days trying to achieve holiness by keeping the rules they had added to God’s laws.  Jesus’ accusation that they didn’t keep Moses’ law stung them deeply in spite of their pompous pride in themselves and their rules, they did even fulfill a legalistic religion because they were living far below what the Law of Moses required.

John 7:20 – The people answered and said Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?  Rather than believing Jesus was the Son of God and the power He used came from God they said He had a devil and lied about them seeking to find a way to kill Him.  Most of the people were probably not aware of the plot to kill Jesus.  There was a small group looking for the right opportunity to kill Him, but most were still trying to decide what they believed about Him.

John 7:21 – Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.  One work probably refers to the healing of the man who had an infirmity for thirty-eight years and lying by the pool waiting for someone to assist him in the pool when the angel would come at certain times and stirred the water and the first one stepped in was healed.  When Jesus saw him, he asked him did he want to be made whole and when his reply was yes, Jesus healed him, and instructed him to rise, take up his bed and walk.  They knew how long the man had been unable to walk as well as about how long he had been waiting at the pool.   When they witness Jesus healing him they all marveled being an eye witness of the miracle.

John 7:22- Moses, therefore, gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.   Jesus reminded them they continue to keep the instructions of Moses for circumcision.  Circumcision was to be performed on the eighth days after the birth of male child.  If the eighth day after the birth was a Sabbath, the circumcision was still performed even though it was considered as work.  While the religious leaders allow certain exceptions to Sabbath laws they allowed none to Jesus; who was simply showing mercy to those who needed healing. They circumcised a man on the Sabbath keeping the law and was against Jesus healing a man because it was on the Sabbath.

John 7:23 – If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? Jesus is asking them a question if a man can be circumcised on the Sabbath Day which didn’t apply to salvation but keeping a law that wasn’t effective, but you’re angry with me because I healed a man and made him whole both physically and spiritually.  Jesus asked why the leaders were angry with Him for making a man completely well on the Sabbath.

John 7:24 – Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.  Jesus explains to them don’t judge by what appears to be a sin by healing on the Sabbath, but judge what is right to do whether it be on a Sabbath or not.

John 7:25 – Then said some of Jerusalem, Is not he, whom they seek to kill?  Rather than accepting the instructions Jesus was giving them; they interrupt the listeners by asking if Jesus was the One they were seeking to kill.  Jesus just had spoken earlier about them seeking to kill Him and they denied it.  Maybe it was some in the crowd that didn’t  want to kill Him but accepted His teaching and His claim to be the Son of God.The religious leaders didn’t want anyone to know their plot, so they asked the question to detour what was being said.

John 7:26 –  But, lo, he speaketh boldly and they say nothing unto him.  Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?  The people were wondering among themselves if the rulers knew that this was Jesus, the Son of God.  They had heard Him speak and He spoke the doctrine that He was teaching with boldness.  They saw the miracles He had performed, no other prophet or religious leader had performed.

John 7:27 – Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.  There was a popular tradition that the Messiah would simply appear, but those who believed this tradition were ignoring the Scriptures that clearly predicted the Messiah’s birthplace.  The Jewish people seem to have expected the Messiah to appear suddenly from nowhere.  They reasoned that since they knew where Jesus came from, He could not be the Messiah.  They were ignorant of the Scriptures because Micah had predicted the Messiah would come from Bethlehem (But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting – Micah 5:2). Either the religious leader was ignoring the prophecy or they rejected it, either way, they weren’t accepting Jesus as the Messiah or accepting His teaching.

John 7:28 – Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.  “Cried out” signifies a loud strong emotion.  Jesus reminded the leaders that they knew His origin, their problem was that they did not know God, who sent Jesus.

John 7:29 – But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.  He explained to them they that He knew God, and was from God and was sent by God.

John 7:30 –  Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him because his hour was not yet come.  Because of Jesus’ public claims of divine origin, the religious leaders sought to arrest Him. No one could lay hands on Him because His hour had not come for Him to be arrested or die.  God is sovereign and He alone sets the time. As with Jesus, so is it with us; no one can touch us without the Father’s consent.

Golden Text:  “This is my covenant, which ye shall keep. between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised (Genesis 17:1)

Introduction

Abraham was the forefather of both the Jews and the Arabs.  He was originally called Abram and left Ur in ancient Sumeria (Mesopotamia) to travel to Haran in Syria.  He eventually migrated to Canaan where God promised him that his descendants would ultimately dwell.  He lived to be a 175 years old.  God called Abram to separate from his kindred to go into the land that the Lord would direct him. God promised Abram He would make him of a great nation.

Ten years had passed since God first made Abram a promise of a child, Abram suggested he should adopt his steward but God refuses the offer, and clearly promises that Abram will have a child of his own that he produced.  Sarai and Abram took matters into their own hands; Sarai suggested Abram obtain a child through her handmaid, Hagar. Abram did as Sarai suggested and he and Hagar produced Ishmael at the age of 86.

Thirteen years later God appeared to Abram and made a covenant, the covenant God made with Abraham is a foundational covenant for the Jewish people and the sign of that covenant was circumcision.

Thirteen years after the birth of Ishmael when Abraham was ninety-nine years old God appeared to him with a command and unconditional covenant.  The act of circumcision ratified the covenant between God and Abraham.  He complied with God’s instructions for every male among his people.

In response to Abraham’s obedience, God bestowed upon him a blessing that we still witness today.

Bible Study – John Chapter 7 Verses 1-15

John 7:1 – After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry (Judea) because the Jews sought to kill him.  The reason is given why Jesus spent more of His time in Galilee than in Judea because the Jews the people of Judea and Jerusalem sought to kill Him for curing the impotent man on the Sabbath Day. He didn’t walk among them because He was afraid, but in prudence, because His hour was not yet come. Jesus will withdraw from those that drive Him from them.  Jesus neither the Father will never impose Themselves on anyone that does not willingly choose to serve the Father.

John 7:2 – Now the Jews feast of tabernacles was at hand.  The Feast of Tabernacles was one one of the three great Jewish religious festivals (Passover and Pentecost were the other two).  It was called the Feast of Tabernacles because for seven days the people lived in makeshift shelters or lean-tos made of branches and leaves. The feast commemorated the days when the Israelites wandered in the wilderness and lived in tents.  The Feast of Tabernacle is described in Leviticus 23:33, this event occurred in October about six months after the Passover celebration.  The Feast of Tabernacles was one of the three solemnities which called for the personal attendance of all the males at Jerusalem.

John 7:3 – His brethren, therefore, said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.  Jesus’ discourse with His brethren, they interposed to advise Him in His conduct for two reasons (1) That it would be an encouragement to those in and about Jerusalem.  They would have had the disciples there particularly countenanced and thought the time  He spent with His Galilean disciples wasted and thrown away, and His miracles turning to no account unless those at Jerusalem saw them.  (2) That it would be for the advancement of His name; they took it for granted that Jesus sought to make Himself known.

John 7:4 – For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret and he himself seeketh to be known openly.  If thou do these things show thyself to the world.  Jesus’ brothers argued, “If You are really working miracles and thus claiming to be the Messiah, do not hide in obscure Galilee.  If ye are doing miracles at all, then do them in Jerusalem at the Feast to convince the whole nation”.  Jesus’ disciples didn’t understand that Jesus wasn’t there to prove who He was, but He came to glorify the Father and redeem mankind from sin. His disciples who were trying to influence Him had difficulties believing in Him.

John 7:5 – For neither did his brethren believe in him.  What was there amiss in the advice which they gave him?  It was signed that they didn’t believe in Him being able to guide them when they also thought that He couldn’t guide Himself.  They discovered a great carelessness about His safety when they would have Him go to Judea where they knew the Jews sought to kill Him. Their carnal thinking could have been, He would have to perform a miracle or a sign to prove to them in Jerusalem that He was the Son of God that He was claiming to be.

John 7:6 – Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is always ready.  Jesus tells His brothers that the time for manifesting Himself to the world had not yet come.  Like Jesus, those who have been chosen also have a timing to be brought into the public. It may seem as though they will never be brought into the public, but wait on God; for His timing is not your timing. When we wait on God we will not lead anyone in doctrine-mental errors. We will lead by His Spirit and not our own.

John 7:7 – The world cannot hate you: but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.   The world was not about to hate Jesus’ brothers because they were part of it.  Because the world hated Jesus, we who follow Him can expect that many people will hate us as well. When Jesus speaks of the world, He’s speaking of people.  People whose heart have not been regenerated will hate the disciple just as they hated the Master. Those who are truly followers of Christ will teach as He taught, and will live a lifestyle as He lived.  It is great uneasiness and provocation to the world to be convicted of the evil of its works.  Whatever is pretended the real cause of the world’s enmity to the gospel is the testimony it bears against sin and sinners.  It is better to incur the world’s hatred by testifying against its wickedness than gain its goodwill by going down stream with it.

John 7:8 – Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come. Jesus is not saying He will not go at all, but not yet.  He’s not departing from His purpose, it wasn’t His time. Him saying “I go not yet unto this feast, for my time is not yet full come”, He is saying “It’s not the time to His death”. He wanted to be in the will of the Father; following the time it was set for Him to die.

John 7:9- When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.  Jesus continues in Galilee until His full time was to come to go to Jerusalem. Jesus main focus was to stay in the will of the Father, it was about the Father and not Him.  Too many times leaders want the focus to be on them when it should be about the Father. Leaders should be leading people to the Father and Son and not themselves.

John 7:10 – But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.  His carnal brethren went first, it is not who comes first that will be the question, but who come the fittest.  If we bring our hearts with us it does not matter who gets before us.  Jesus was going with the right motive to Jerusalem whereas His disciples were going with the wrong motive.  Jesus came with the greatest gift ever offered, so why did He often act secretly?  The religious leaders hated Him and would refuse His gift of salvation no matter what He said or did.  The more He taught and worked publicly the more these leaders would cause trouble for Jesus and His followers.  So it was necessary for Jesus to teach and work quietly.  He was not trying to receive recognition, He was not trying to get the public attention; He was there to offer the greatest gift that could be offered.

John 7:11 – Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said where is he?  The Jews were seeking to find Him at the feast, some wanted to see Him to hear His words while others were seeking Him to destroy Him. They hoped the feast would bring Him to Jerusalem and then they would see Him.

John 7:12 – And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.  The people differed in their thoughts about Him.  This murmuring was not against Jesus but concerning Him. Some murmured about the rulers because they did not countenance and encourage Him.  Others murmured at them because they did not silence and restrain Him.  Even those who would not believe Him to be the Messiah conceived Him as a good man.  Those that say He deceived the people most likely were the high rulers who opposed Jesus and His teaching.

John 7:13 – Howbeit no man spake openly of him for the fear of the Jews.  The religious leader had a great deal of power over the common people.  It appears they couldn’t do much to Jesus at this time, but they threatened anyone who might publicly support Him.  Excommunication from the synagogue was one of the reprisals for believing in Jesus, to a Jew, this was a severe punishment.  How many Christians today keep silent because of their fear of what others will say or think of them because of their faith in Jesus?  As Christians, we can’t be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

John 7:14 – Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.  The middle of the feast would have been the fourth day of the seven-day feast.  During the first half of the festival Jesus remained in seclusion; during the second half, He began to teach publicly.  Why did He not go to the temple sooner to preach?  Because the people would have more leisure to hear Him when they had spent some days in their booths. Because He would choose to appear when both His friends and His enemies had done looking for Him. His going into the temple showed the people and leaders that He was not afraid.  Jesus’ teaching took their work out of their hands.  Their office taught the people in the temple the doctrine of the commandments of men, and therefore He goes up to the temple and teaches the people the doctrine of God.

John 7:15 – And the Jews marveled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?  “Having never learned” means never having attended a rabbinical school.  Jesus had learned from the Father, and He taught what His Father taught. He was teaching the preparation for life for eternity not the doctrine of men.  They didn’t comprehend Jesus was teaching the doctrine of the One who sent Him. His teaching also gives a testimony that one does not have to attend a Seminary to have knowledge of the Word of God, but the student should be taught by bending the knees and heart to the instructions of the Word of God.
