And when he had apprehended Him, he put Him in prison, and delivered Him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep Him; intending after Easter to bring Him forth to the people – Acts 12:4
Passover is the first of three great annual festivals of the Hebrews held in Nisan 14th to 21st. The meaning was to commemorate when the Hebrews were delivered from Egypt when the Lord passed over the first born of the Hebrews, but killed the first born of the Egyptians. The position of sitting down to the meal or reclining was adopted by the Hebrews as a sign of their freedom, as though just out of Egypt. Peter had been taken prisoner by King Herod, and he had killed James, the brother of John. When King Herod seen that it pleased the Jews, he was going to bring Peter before the Jews, but he was going to wait until after Easter, translated in Greek the “Passover”. While Peter was in prison, prayer was being made for his release. The night before Peter was to be placed on trial, while he was asleep between two soldiers, bound with chains, and the guards, an angel of the Lord came and delivered him. The angel instructed him to get up, and the chains fell from his hands. He was instructed to put on his sandals and clothes and to follow him. When he was released he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John where they were gathered together praying. Prayer is the Christian’s armor, if we prayed the way would should many unbelievers would be believers of Jesus because the prison chains that have them bound would be broken.
Easter is a celebration for Christians for their release of being held prisoner by sin, because of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Millions celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, the Lamb of God (and shall deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge and to crucify Him, and the third day He shall rise again – Matthew 20:19). Some call Easter a pagan holiday, but if anyone is to celebrate, it should be those who have been touched by the Son of God and have been released from the bondage of sin. Don’t allow anyone to stop you from celebrating Easter. We should inform our children, Easter is not about dressing up and the Easter bunny, and egg hunts, Easter is about the celebration of our Lord and Savior being RISEN!
