Fruit of the Spirit (Temperance)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness faith. Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law – Galatians 5:22:23

The word fruit is significant for three reasons, the results, product, outcome or effect produced by the Spirit in the believer’s life. Every Christian is to have all nine virtues of the Fruit of the Spirit. Just like fruit on a tree, they don’t grow over night, the Spirit cultivate these virtues in every believer’s life if they will allow the cultivation process.

Self control is crucial in the believer’s life. Over indulgence in any area of our life can be detrimental to us naturally or spiritually. Naturally, if we’re spending more time at work than at home, it can cause division, disunity and resentment in the home. Spending money we don’t have can cause financially problems as well as emotionally problems because if there isn’t enough money to pay for what has been spent, it can cause depression and other mental and emotional problems. Over-eating can cause weight problem, not eating enough, being afraid to gain weight can cause health problems.

Attending church, prayer, reading and studying the word of God also must be done with temperance. If we’re spending too much time doing spiritual things, and leaving the natural things undone such as employment, house cleaning, cooking, washing and spending time with family will cause a problem. Temperance must be carried out in every area of our life, we’re citizens of two kingdoms, and each kingdom has laws that have been enforced for the citizens of that kingdom.

If we want to avoid jail and prison, we must abide by the natural law, no matter how much we may be in need financially, if we steal or take from anyone without permission we will be jailed or in prison. Parking in a tow zone will get you a ticket, and if the ticket is not paid in time, it will be a fine and eventually a boot, this is some of the laws naturally. Spiritually, God has given us an instruction manual to read known as the Bible if we want to avoid hell. Just like the natural law, if we don’t abide by the spiritual law, we will be judged and a sentence will be given. So in order to avoid destruction and hell, we must submit to the spiritual law, and it’s accomplished by temperance and submitting to the instructions (Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand – Revelation 1:3).

Fruit of the Spirit should be produced in every believers’ life, but it can’t be cultivated unless the believer is willing to go through the process. Fruit of the Spirit gradually comes into the life of a believer, it’s not done over night. The more we come subject to God’s word and allowing His will for our life, the more fruit we will produce. God’s word is His will, and His will is His word. In order for the Fruit to be produced, it comes by the dwelling of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is  a gift that God gives to every believer that asks for it (If ye then being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him – Luke 11:13). Jesus was instructing His followers, His chosen disciples. He also instructed them that they would be witnesses of Him once they received the Holy Spirit (But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth – Acts 1:8). We have been chosen by the Lord to be His disciples, and just as the disciples of the Bible needed the dwelling of the Holy Spirit, so do we. Fruit of the Spirit is the characteristics of God and His Son, and in order for the Fruit to be produced they have to cultivated and the Holy Spirit is the one that does the cultivation to bring about the Fruit of the Spirit of love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance.
