Abraham was the forefather of both the Jews and the Arabs, but prior to being chosen, he served and worshipped strange gods like his father and his family. When God chose him, he was instructed to leave his country, his father’s house and family, meaning his extended family. Staying too close with those who were practicing idolatry would have been tempting and most likely influenced Abraham to continue to live his old lifestyle.

Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen – 1st John 5:21

A idol is a image of a god, used as an object of worship; any object of ardent or excessive devotion.

Many of God’s people have turned to worship idols rather than worshiping God; while others try to worship God and their idol. Idols mentioned in the Bible were man-made images representing their gods. They were carved from wood, clay or stone and some were cast metal.
