Time: A.D. 30 – Place: Sea of Tiberias
Golden Text: “Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples’ durst ask him, Who art thou? Knowing that it was the Lord (John 21:12).
Introduction
Jesus had been crucified, His followers, Magdalene, Joanna and Mary the mother of James had returned home to prepare spices and ointments to finish preparing Jesus’ body for burial. In keeping their devotion to the Lord and His commandments, they rested on the Sabbath Day. After the Sabbath, they and other women went to the tomb only to find that Jesus wasn’t there. Having an encounter with an angel who informed them Jesus had risen like He had foretold them. Two of Jesus’ disciples had an encounter with the Risen Christ while they walked from Jerusalem to Emmaus, they invited Him to stay with them for a meal. At the meal as Jesus took bread, blessed it and gave to them, as soon as He gave them the bread they understood it was Jesus who had been talking with them while they were walking. In this lesson, we learn about Jesus’ appearance to others. Peter, James, and John went fishing accompanied by other disciples. They stayed there until the night and didn’t catch one fish. In the morning when they reached the shore, Jesus was there unknown to them, asked if they had any meat. Their reply was no, He instructed them to cast their net on the right side of the ship and they would find fish. Following His instructions, they caught a multitude of fish. When they came to shore they saw fish lying on a bed of coals and bread. Jesus asked them to come and dine with Him, neither one of the disciples asked who He was for they all knew it was Jesus.
Lesson Outline: I. Gathering After Christ’ s Resurrection – John 21:1-3a
John 21:1 – After these things, Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself. After Jesus had appeared to a number of people following His resurrection, the disciples headed north to Galilee to meet Him.In those Christ showed Himself to His disciples when they were met upon a Lord’s day, and when they were all together; but in this, He showed Himself to some of them upon a weekday, when they were fishing. Christ didn’t show Himself to the twelve but to seven of them.
John 21:2 – There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. Despite the fact that the resurrected Jesus Christ had made several appearances to His followers, the disciples still had not fully come to grips with who Jesus really was and their special calling. It had been three years since they had first met and agreed to follow Jesus of Nazareth. Christ chose to manifest Himself to them when they were together that they might be a joint witness of the same matter of fact. Thomas was one of them and is named next to Peter as if he now kept closer to the meetings of the apostles than ever. They all had met with a common cause waiting on Jesus as they had been instructed to do after His resurrection.
John 21:3a – Simon Peter saith unto them I go fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. As the seven men talked among themselves Peter decided he was going fishing and he told the other disciples, they too decided to go with Peter. They did it to redeem the time and not be idle, rather than doing nothing they would go fishing. We too must redeem the time while we’re waiting for Jesus in order to not be idle, impatience or lose faith. Peter was always the outspoken one, he wanted to return to his life as a fisherman; he may have thought that the plan of Christ as he saw it had ended so he wanted to move on with his life. He was very much aware that Jesus had chosen him, but since Jesus’ crucifixion, would fishing be his destiny. This is why the Bible instructs the Believer let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not.
Lesson Outline: II. Fishing On The Sea – John 21:3b-8
John 21:3b – They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately, and that night they caught nothing. As soon as they all agreed to go fishing they immediately went on the ship and spent the whole night fishing and caught nothing. Providence so ordered it that all that night they should catch nothing that the miraculous draught of fishes in the morning might be the more acceptable with gratitude.
John 21:4 – But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. When morning came, Jesus came and stood on the shore; apparently, the disciples could see a figure standing on the shore but they could not identify Him. Christ’s time of making Himself known to His people is when they are most at loss. When they think they have lost themselves, He will let them know that they have not lost Him. He showed Himself to them gradually. The disciples knew not, all at once that it was Jesus. When we’re going through difficult times, Christ is often nearer to us than we think He is.
John 21:5 – Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. “Children” was an affectionate greeting not a term of condescension. The question from the shore was probably regarded as a request to buy fish. The disciples answered that they had nothing to sell. The Lord knew they had not caught any fish; it seems He posed this question to point out their inability to accomplish anything on their own.
John 21:6 – And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. They still hadn’t recognized Jesus, they assumed they were talking with a stranger. Out of the mist, the stranger instructed them to cast their net on the right side of the ship. Tolling all night, they probably were sleepy, tired, and was weary from not caught any fish, the stranger’s suggestion sound pretty good at this time. These were professional fishermen, they could have disregarded the stranger’s suggestion and would not have received anything.
John 21:7 – Therefore that disciple who Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher’s coat unto him, (for he was naked), and did cast himself into the sea. The disciple whom Jesus loved was John, who recognized that it was the Lord and He told Peter. The unusual instruction and the resultant catch of fish told John that it was the Lord who was giving them the instructions. Peter, was dressed for work, Jewish law required a person to be clothed for all religious acts. Because the law considered offering a greeting to be a religious act, the loincloth Peter wore for fishing was inadequate apparel for greeting. Peter quickly put on his outer garments and jumped into the sea to swim toward the shore.
John 21:8 – And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits), dragging the net with the fish. The rest of the disciples came in the ship that wasn’t far from the shore dragging the net of fish they had caught by being obedient to the instructions that were given to them who they thought was a stranger.
Lesson Outline: III. Meeting Jesus On The Shore – John 21:9-14
John 21:9 – As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. As soon as they reached shore they noticed a fire with coals and fish was cooking along with bread. Jesus had already made a fire and started cooking. Where did the fish and coal come from; had Jesus prepared a miracle as He did when He fed the five thousand?
John 21:10 – Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. Jesus told the disciples to bring more fish from their catch.
John 21:11 – Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, and hundred and fifty and three and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. Peter dragged a hundred and fifty-three fish to the shore without it being broke.
John 21:12 – Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? Knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus invited the disciples to dine with Him, everyone knew who He was but no one asked the question, who art thou? He treated them as friends.
John 21:13 – Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. Jesus gave the meat to His guests, He not only provided it for them but he Himself divided it among them.
John 21:14 – This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to this disciples, after that he was risen from the dead. This was Jesus’ third appearance to the disciples as a group after His resurrection. In His appearance, Jesus was assuring them of His bodily resurrection and building their faith. He was no vision or apparition, He could be touched, He talked with them and dined.

Bible Study – John Chapter 11 Verses 23-33
God has given us a roadmap that will lead us in the way He has instructed us to live. We can’t take different Scriptures we will live by and dismiss the rest. The Old and New Testament is for our learning and for our guidance. In order to follow the guideline, we must first read the Bible and then take time to study what the Scriptures are saying. Be prayerful and ask the Father for understanding so that you may live according to His instructions and not by intellectual knowledge. The Bible is for you to learn how to know the Father, live according to Scriptures and to live in His power for both the natural and spiritual.
John 11:23 – Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again – Jesus had been preaching in the villages beyond the Jordan when He received the news of Lazarus’s sickness but waited two days before returning to Judea, He knew Lazarus would be dead when He arrived in Bethany, but He was going to do a great miracle. When He arrived at Bethany Martha met Him and told Him if He would have been there her brother wouldn’t have died. She had enough faith to believe that if Jesus would pray to the Father, He would hear Him and answer His prayer. Jesus told her, her brother should rise again.
John 11:24 – Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Martha was looking into the future when all the saints shall rise. She didn’t have the “Now faith”, although she probably had seen and heard of the other miracles Jesus had performed.
John 11:25 – Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall live. Jesus has power over life and death. This is because He is the Creator of life, He who is life can surely restore life. Whoever believes in Him has a spiritual life that death can’t touch or diminish in any way. Jesus Christ is the resurrection of those who believe and are physically dead. He is the life for those who believe and have not yet died. In order to have eternal life, a person must place his or her faith in Jesus, who is the Christ, the Son of God who came into the world to bring eternal life to those who believe. Because Jesus is the resurrector, as children of God, we can go to the Father in Jesus’ name asking for all things that have died that can be resurrected to be resurrected. Jesus is the giver of life and the sustainer of life. The same miracle Jesus performed on Lazarus if the saints of God would have faith, live according to His Word, Jesus will resurrect the dead in this age. The Word of God never changes, it’s the same yesterday, today and forever!
John 11:26 – And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die, Believest thou this? Jesus’ reply to Martha was he or she that is living and will continue to believe in Jesus shall never die. Life sometimes can hit so hard even the very best Christian will lose faith. This is why Jesus has admonished the believer to live and keep His Father’s commandments they don’t have to worry about death, death is just a closer presence of being with the Lord. Now He asks Martha, do she believe His reply to the resurrection.
John 11:27 – She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God which should come into the world. Martha is best known for being too busy to sit down and talk with Jesus, but here we see her as a woman of deep faith. Too many times believer think they have to have big faith in order to receive an answer to their prayer. The Bible admonishes the believer if they had the faith of a mustard seed, it would move a mountain. Sometimes we have to be like the Centurion and say “Lord, I believe, but help thou my unbelief”. Sometimes we stagger in our belief, but the Father wants us to know it’s Him and His Son that gives the blessings of answered prayers, all we have to do is believe He can do what we need Him to do. What is impossible with us, is possible with God, He works in the impossible.
John 11:28 -And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth thee. After she made her reply, she left Jesus to go get her sister Mary. After she stepped out of the temporal, she peeped into the eternal and her faith was in Jesus and not what she was seeing. What we see will make us lose faith, but we have to get our attention off what we see but what we believe and know God can do. When faith is weak, get your Bible and find Scriptures that designated to your situation and speak them out loud until you encourage yourself in the Word of the Father. Unbelief will not move God, His Word and our faith in His Word is what moves the hand of God. He watches over His Word to perform them.
John 11:29 – As soon as she heard that she rose quickly, and came unto him. When Mary first heard that Jesus was coming, she didn’t move. She sat and most likely was praying for the impossible knowing when He came, He would make the impossible, possible.
John 11:30 – Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. Jesus hadn’t made it to Mary, He was still in the place where He had been speaking with Martha.
John 11:31 – The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. The Jews who were comforting Mary thought when she arose quickly and went out of the house that she was going to Lazarus tomb to mourn. They didn’t realize the Master was summoning her, and she rose to the occasion. When the Spirit of the Lord gives us an unction to say something or do something, we must not hesitate but be willing to do what He asks of us.
John 11:32 – Then when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at this feet, saying, unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. Mary said the same thing to the Lord as Martha had, no doubt they had expressed this thought to one another often in the previous days. They both had faith in Jesus that if He would have been there their brother wouldn’t have died. Neither one them thought He could have sent His Word and healed and resurrected Lazarus.
John 11:33 – When Jesus, therefore, saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled. Groaned means to be deeply moved, troubled means to be stirred up, disturbed. Jesus was moved by the mourning of Mary and indignant at the hypocritical lamentation of His enemies. The groaned also could have been Him talking with the Father regarding this situation. People who have a consistent prayer life and living according to God’s Word will sometime groan as they are talking to the Father. Jesus was concerned about Mary and Martha. He didn’t want Lazarus to die but in order to do a miracle, something had to happen. This is a good example of people requesting a miracle from the Father, miracles will be given, but what has to happen in order to receive a miracle. It’s something else to ask for a miracle when something has happened like with Lazarus or other critical matters, but just requesting for a miracle and nothing is wrong, we must be careful! Jesus is life, the Creator, the sustainer, intercessory, and Savior of those who believe in Him.
