But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay lest ye fall into condemnation (judgment) – James 5:12
Years ago a person could give their word and that would be their agreement. It was a person’s verbal contract, and people who knew the individual knew when they gave their word it was as good as gold.
As Christians, we’re sometimes looked upon from the secular world as people without educational knowledge, and believing in Jesus as a crutch. One thing they will always bring to our knowledge is if they catch a so-called Christian in a lie or other behaviors not becoming as Christian, “I thought you or they were a Christian”. Our behavior and our words should be as our Father. We should be able to give people our word without swearing by using God’s name in vain or making any type of oath.
So many times we sin foolishly because we don’t take time to read the Bible. So many times people swear to make a point that they are really telling the truth, but if we’re living an example of the instructions of God’s word, they will know just by behavior and words, we’re telling the truth or whatever agreement, we have made, we will keep our agreement. Don’t swear, it will bring the judgment of God upon us!
