Power Over Sin

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. – Romans 6:12-13.

Though believers in Christ have died to sin, sin is still a problem. The sin principle is still present and can express itself through the mortal body. Sin has no right to reign in our bodies if we have submitted ourselves entirely to the Word of God and the Spirit of God.

Everyone is born into sin; sin is depraved in nature and is in need of salvation. Salvation is done instantly when we accept Jesus as our Savior, but sanctification comes gradually. No one grows into a spiritual giant overnight, but as we seek to please the Lord through our submission to His Father’s instructions, we will grow spiritually.

The word “Let not sin” suggests that we, as believers, have power over sin. Anything that opposes the instructions of God’s written Word is a sin. Therefore, if we abide in it, we will be compensated for our sins (For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord – Romans 6:23. There is no reason for anyone to die and go to hell when God has given us a way of escape through the acceptance of His  Son as our Lord and Savior.

Many accept Jesus as their Savior, the one who saves them from pain and suffering, the one who saves them from their enemies, the one who saves them from everything they don’t want to come into their life, but they don’t want Him to be Lord over their life.

The only way we can have power over sin is to accept the one who gives us control over sin and then apply the instructions to our lives daily. The Word of God has instructed the believer to resist the devil, and he will flee (Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you – James 4:7). Notice it says, submit yourself to God, that’s when we can resist the devil through the power He gives us.

We can’t fight sin in our strength, but we can conquer sin by submitting to God and His Word. You’re not defeated. Read God’s Word, believe His Word, and take authority with His Word over sin.
