Spiritual Death

He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches, He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death – Revelation 2:11.

The Bible speaks of death in threefold ways: physical, spiritual, and eternal. The ancient Hebrews regarded physical death as an entrance into Sheol, where they were cut off from everything dear in life, including God and loved ones. Because all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, all people who haven’t accepted the free gift of salvation through Jesus are spiritually dead, separated from God, who is the source of spiritual life.

The Bible speaks of the second death, which is the everlasting separation of the lost from God in hell. In His resurrection, Jesus conquered physical, spiritual, and eternal death. Through fear of death, people are subject to bondage, but Jesus, our Lord, and Savior, has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. Believers and nonbelievers alike experience physical death. All people will be resurrected, but believers will be resurrected to eternal life with God, while unbelievers will be resurrected to be punished.

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death – Revelation 21:7

There are many believers who have accepted the gift of salvation, but they haven’t accepted the sanctification that makes us one with God and His Son.

Unto the church of God which is at Corinthian to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord both their and ours – 1st Corinthians 1:2.

A local church of God is a group of people who identify themselves with God and gather together to worship and serve Him. Sanctified in Christ Jesus, the Corinthians’ holiness came from their position in Christ, not from their own goodness. The verb sanctified indicates that God had sanctified the Corinthians at a specific time in the past, producing a condition that they still enjoyed in the present. Called to be saints, the work of Jesus Christ makes a believer holy forever in God’s eyes, but in everyday living, sanctification involves small daily changes in the life of the believers giving an example of our Father and brother, Jesus Christ.

It’s more to being a Christian than just believing; the devils believe, but they aren’t subjected to the Word of God. They hate God and His Word because they know God’s Word is true and it will not return to Him void (Thou believes that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe and tremble – James 2:19).  Believing and not adhering to the Word of God, is like those who reject the Father, the Son, and the Word of God (Whosoever transgresseth and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ he hath both the Father and the Son – 2nd John 1:9).

Departure from Christ into doctrinal error indicates that a person does not have God. Love for God means supporting the truth and rejecting those who stand against it. How can we know the truth or adhere to the truth if we don’t know it? This is why it’s the professing Christian’s responsibility to take time and read and study the Bible; it would be a sad day to die and have lived opposite of the Word of God or when Jesus returns for His church and would be left behind!

Never allow anything or anyone to keep you from spending time with God in prayer and reading His Word. Prayer is what makes us connected with God; reading and studying the Word is what assists us in complying with the written Word. To escape the second death, we must adhere to God’s written instructions for the believer.
