Job Description of A Christian – Part 1

And he that keepeth His commandments dwelleth in Him, and He in him. And hereby we know that He abideth in us, by the Spirit which hath has given us. 1st John 3:24

When applying for an employment position, the employer will give the potential employee a job description. The description will list everything the potential employee is required to do in order to get the position and keep the position. We have been chosen by God to be employed as Christians, and we too have been given a job description. Once saved, always saved is not in the contract agreement. As Christians, if we want to be compensated, we must continue to live according to God’s written word until He calls us home.

Soldiers  (Thou therefore endure hardness (hardship) , as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please Him who hath chosen him to be a soldier – 2nd Timothy 2:3-4). Like a single-minded soldier, we should respond to the orders of our Commanding Officer, the Lord Jesus, with unquestioning obedience.

Farmers (The husbandman that laboreth must be first partakers of the fruits – 2nd Timothy 2:6). Farmers labor strenuously and consistently in order to reap a fruitful harvest. We also must work hard in serving the Lord, serving Him is reading the Bible, applying the instructions to our lives daily. Reaching out to others by living by the gospel and telling them about the gospel of salvation is producing crop .

Athletes (And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully – 2nd Timothy 2:5). Athletes follow strict training rules so as to avoid being disqualified from their race; we must display a similar measure of self-control. We must train by knowing the rules and regulations of the Bible, and then follow the rules to keep from being disqualified.

Workers (Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth – 2nd Timothy 2:15).  Our work is rightly divide or correctly handles God’s word so as to avoid shame. Truth defines the nature of Scripture. Believers are to be teachers by living instructors of the word of God. Teachers should make every effort to handle His truth accurately to avoid false teaching, and eliminate others from living opposite of the written instructions of God’s word.

Vessels (But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth (clay); and some to honor, and some to dishonor. If a man therefore purge himself  from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work-2nd Timothy 2:20-21). We must take care to keep ourselves pure, like a clean dish, so that we will be useful for the Master. It’s keeping ourselves from ungodly actions and behaviors.

Fishers of Men (And He said unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men – Matthew 4:19). As Christians, we should be fisherman, we are called to “catch” men with Good News of Jesus Christ. We’re not to bring confusion or misinterpretation of the Scriptures.

Salt (Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savor (flavor), wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and be trodden under foot of men – Matthew 5:13). As salt, we act as a godly preservative in an evil society, moreover, we’re to make people thirsty to know their Creator. When seasoning has no flavor, it has no value. If Christians make no effort to affect the world around them, they are of little value to God. If we’re too much like the world, we are worthless. As Christians, we should not blend in with everyone else. Instead, we should affect them positively, just as seasoning brings out the best flavor in food. The question we should have for ourselves, is “Have I made anyone thirsty for Jesus”? Our lives should be different from those whose not professing Christianity. Our actions and behavior can’t be an example of the world and God, we must choose who we will serve, we can’t serve both.
