Tongues

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit, he speaketh mysteries – 1st Corinthians 14:2.

Praying in tongues has been a debate in the Christian community for years. Some say tongues are not for believers today, while others don’t want to have anything to do with speaking in tongues; they degrade it as though it was some type of disease when the Bible speaks about the believer speaking in tongues.

In most movies about demons, people and demons speak in tongues, but when the righteous speak in tongues, they are devilish or uneducated. When people talk about tongues degradingly, they speak against the Holy Spirit. Yes, some people who speak in tongues are possessed by Satan; Satan has always imitated what God does. One can only speak in tongues by the Holy Spirit or Satan.

Before Jesus’ ascension, He instructed His disciples or followers to go to Jerusalem and wait for the promise. They all continued with one purpose or mind in prayer and supplication in the upper room. On the day of Pentecost, they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. The Word of God never changes. He is still instructing His people to be filled with the Holy Spirit and led by the Spirit, not their own spirit.

In writing to the church at Corinth, the Apostle Paul encouraged believers to speak with other tongues in their private worship and in their prayer life as a means of spiritual edification. Praying in tongues is a charge to our spirit. The word charge is often used in reference to a battery; if a battery in an automobile runs down, we hook it up to a power source and charge it up. In other words, we build up the battery until it has the power to do what it was made to do. In other words, as we pray in tongues, we charge up our spirits with the power of the Holy Spirit!

We have been instructed to pray in the spirit (But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost – Jude 20. If your spiritual battery runs down, this Scripture tells you how to charge it. When you pray in the Holy Spirit, and speaking in tongues benefits you; it builds your spirit, man, so that you can live and do what you were meant to do!

Thank God for this supernatural means of building ourselves up on our most holy faith! Yes, we can be built up by reading the Bible, and yes, we can be greatly helped by praying other kinds of prayers in our language we’re familiar with, but yet speaking in tongues is one primary way God has given us to build our spirit, and nothing else can take its place.

Just because you’re born again and Spirit-baptized doesn’t mean you’ve “arrived” and there’s nothing else you need in your walk with God. You still need to receive might from God’s Spirit in your inner man. You need to know the Word, quote the Scriptures, and make confessions in line with God’s promises. All of this is important, but there is nothing like being able to speak to God (For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him, howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries – 1st Corinthians 14:2).

When one speaks in tongues, no one can interpret it unless God wants what has been prayed to be interpreted (But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church, and let him speak to himself and to God – 1st Corinthians 14:28). Secondly, praying in tongues stop Satan from hindering your prayers because he can’t interpret what’s being prayed. Thirdly, tongues are a sign to the non-believer (Wherefore tongues are for a sign not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe – 1 Corinthians 14:22).

People and Satan have discouraged people from receiving the Holy Spirit when it’s a gift to everyone willing to submit to God’s written Word. The Holy Spirit prompts us to pray when we don’t know what to pray for. The Holy Spirit enables us to pray exactly for what God will have us pray for. The Holy Spirit will never pray against God’s will or for something dishonoring God’s character.

Speaking in tongues is a sign one has been baptized in the Holy Spirit; this does not mean if one does not speak in tongues, they have not received the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit sanctifies, and when He sanctifies He’s purifying the person so that He can dwell there. People can only live a sanctified lifestyle through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

Divers Kinds’ of Tongues are different than speaking in tongues. Diver Kinds of Tongues speak in a language unfamiliar or learned by the person speaking. On the Day of Pentecost, Peter and the other disciples were filled and baptized in the Holy Spirit (And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance – Acts 2:4).

After being filled and baptized in the Holy Spirit, Peter began to speak to the crowd in their native language. There were about sixteen foreigners in the crowd, but when Peter began to talk, every person heard him speak in their language.

God has not changed; He will use Divers Kinds of Tongues to minister to His people. This is why it is so important to receive the filling and baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Fruit of the Spirit and the Gifts of the Spirit are manifested through the believer when they have received the Holy Spirit.

When one is going through difficulties and don’t know what to pray for, the Holy Spirit will begin to pray in you for the things that need to be prayed for (Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered – Romans 8:26).

The Holy Spirit knows exactly what to pray for, and He prays in a language Satan doesn’t understand. He can’t hinder or block what he doesn’t understand. The Holy Spirit is something every believer needs, no matter what denomination therein.

Take time to read and study the Word of God. Pray and ask God for the understanding of the gift of tongues. Just as it was for the people of the Bible, today’s Christians can receive the Holy Spirit as they submit to God’s written Word. It’s the Holy Spirit praying through us; it’s the Holy Spirit interceding for those that need prayer and deliverance. Don’t bash what you don’t understand. Speaking in tongues is a gift God has given to everyone willing to receive it.

The gift of the Holy Spirit is also a gift that you’re guaranteed to enter heaven (And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption – Ephesians 4:30).
