Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak – Matthew 26:41.
Jesus and His disciples were in the Garden of Gethsemane; it was time for Jesus to be taken by the spiritual leaders, leading to His crucifixion. He prayed, and He wanted His disciples to be praying as well.
Jesus first told His disciples to watch; after returning and finding them sleeping, He told them to watch and pray. The disciples needed to stay awake and pray because they were about to be tested themselves. Temptation is the testing of one’s commitment to God; it’s usually enticement to sin or to apostasy from God.
Apostasy is a falling from the faith, forsaking fellowship with God. Prayer is fellowshipping with God and building our relationship with Him. Prayer keeps us alert to the influences Satan will try to entice us with (Therefore, let us not sleep as do others; but let us watch and be sober [self-control]
Christians are admonished to pray (But the end of all things is a hand: be ye, therefore, sober, and watch unto prayer – 1st Peter 4:7). Sober means to be aware of Satan and his influences. People that do not have a consistent prayer life are not aware of his influence, and they fall into temptation.
Peter urges his readers to be sober-minded and disciplined so that they can offer their prayers to God. The majority of professing Christians aren’t disciplined in their time spent with God. They have time for everything except for God.
The first temptation was in the Garden of Eden, where Satan tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. God had given them everything they needed, but Satan influenced her they would be like God, and Eve fell into temptation.
Because Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, it was disobedient and became a sin. Sin is not to be identified simply with the violation of the moral standards of society; rather, sin in its basic sense is always against God Himself.
Sin abounds in the heart until Jesus takes resides in the heart. What’s in our heart will manifest in our actions (For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornication, murders, thefts. covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, and evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness – Mark 7:21-22). Jesus nor the Holy Spirit will constrain us from sin; it has to be in our hearts we don’t want to sin against God.
The Bible regards sin as both universal and pervasive, meaning it spreads. No one is free from sin, and no human behavior or action is free from the effects of sin. Everyone was born into sin (Behold, I was shapen [brought forth] in iniquity and in sin did my mother conceive me – Psalm 51:5). The imputation of sin occurred originally when the sin of Adam was charged to the account of every person.
Adams’ sin fell upon everyone (Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned – Romans 5:12). Because our physical bodies and soul does not get saved, we as Christian must take authority of what we allow our bodies and our soul wants.
If we love Jesus, we will keep His commandments, (Jesus answered, verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of the water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God – John 3:5). No one can take authority of themselves from sin unless they have been born of the Spirit (Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love Me, he will keep My words, and My Father will love him, and We will come unto him, and make Our abode with him -John 3:5).
When one becomes born-again, they become sanctified (For both He that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of One: for which cause He is not ashamed to call them brethren – Hebrews 2:11). Jesus comes and dwells in the heart, and God dwells within the spirit of the believer when they have been born-again causing them to be submitted to God and His instructions to His written Word.
As a Christian, if one doesn’t pray with a consistent prayer life, it’s considered a sin, and sin will spread, making one enter into temptation. Our spirit is always willing; it’s the flesh that keeps one from praying. As Christians, we must discipline ourselves to fast, pray, read, and study the Word of God; if not, we will become tempted.
Jesus instructed His disciples both then and now to watch and pray. Satan is subtle with his influence; if we’re not prayerful, we will fall into his influence. As Christians, we must focus on the things of God, not the world. We are stewards to God; He holds us responsible for presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice, and we must be faithful to God (Moreover, it required in stewards that a man be found faithful – 1st Corinthians 4:2). If we’re faithful to phones, texting, reading our emails, watching our television program, we have entered into temptation because we have placed these things before God.
Examine yourself and what you’re doing with your time, are you giving more time to the things of the world than your time with God? Be committed to living a life that will be pleasing to God. Jesus has empowered every Christian to live a holy life if they desire to. Praying keeps you connected with God and empowers you not to enter into temptation.
